ABOUT
Kenna Griffin has been a writer, editor and educator for more than two decades.
Griffin is a remote media training specialist for The Shield student media at the University of Southern Indiana and an adjunct professor in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma. She has been a full-time professor and college media adviser for nearly two decades, following a career as a professional journalist. Griffin openly professes that student journalists are her “favorite people in the world.”
Griffin is the author of profkrg.com, a site that serves as a practical resource for student journalists.
Griffin has a Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Oklahoma. She researches the relationship between emotional trauma, journalism professionalism and organizational support.
In her “off” time, Griffin likes to read, swim, or just be outdoors in the sunshine and spend time with her family and their four dogs. She reads more than 100 books a year and admits she’s a personal and professional development junkie. She’s also a self-proclaimed word nerd.

covering suicides on campus
If there was a homicide on your campus, would you report on it?
Of course you would. A homicide is big news that impacts your campus community. People need to know about it, perhaps even to protect themselves.
Suicide is a much more common form of death than homicide. Suicide also is big news that impacts your campus community. People need to know about it. Some students may need to understand suicide and what leads to it so they can better protect themselves. Yet suicides are rarely reported.
One in 10 college students has made a plan for suicide. There are more than 1,000 suicides on college campuses each year. Yet, whether to report about them is just not clear.
the kids are not alright
My favorite morning routine is to relax in the quiet with a mug of coffee and a non-fiction book. Two cups of coffee and two chapters later, I’m ready to take on the world. Today I poured my coffee, sat down in the family room chair and texted my friend, Erin.
“I’m at about 20% this morning,” the text read.
I went on to tell her how I can’t get a friend out of my mind. Her grandmother died this week and they can’t even have a funeral for her. The matriarch of our family died in 2019, and I can’t imagine not being able to mourn and celebrate her with family and friends. I just can’t stop thinking about it.
Erin simply responded with “It’s so awful. It’s all so unimaginable.”
I was impressed yesterday in our student media Zoom staff meeting when Erin asked each member of the team to give us their percentage, then talk about one good thing that happened to them that day.
I woke up at about a 40% yesterday, but ended up at about 60% by mid-afternoon. This is unusual for someone who typically operates at more than 90% in her professional life.
I quickly noticed yesterday that our students were operating at much lower percentages than usual, as well.
Advisers, the kids are not alright.
how to write a professional bio
They’re totally checking you out.
Nearly 40 percent of hiring managers use social media to research job candidates, according to a survey from CareerBuilder. About the same percentage report using Google searches to learn about potential employees.
What you want them to find is a consistent message about you—your qualifications, professionalism and personality.
As you continue making a professional brand for yourself, all of your online communication platforms will have one thing in common. They will include a version of your professional bio.
Your social media accounts and professional website all should include your bio. It’s a method of creating a controlled and consistent message about your brand.
Writing your professional bio can be an intimidating task. It’s difficult to write about yourself. You’re uncertain what to include and how to write it in a way that is professional while simultaneously creative.
